The Altruistic Potential of the Artificial Mind

This work was created for the “Not a Portrait” Group Exhibition which was held at the Rust-en-Vrede gallery (30 June – 23 July 2015). All finalists from the SPI National Portrait Award were invited to submit a work for the group exhibition, with the proviso that it was not a portrait.

The robot is a life-size depiction of Honda’s Asimo (the world’s most advanced humanoid robot) caught in the act of creating graffiti. This work incorportes many different tech quotes, such as “The best way to predict the future is to invent it” (Alan Kay) “You affect the world by what you browse.” (Tim Berners-Lee) and “I would love to change the world but they won’t give me the source code.” All of the component parts have been drawn and painted by hand, using a variety of techniques including acrylics, watercolours and inks.

All component parts are cut by hand to create interlocking shapes – and all materials used are acid free.
