This artwork is a celebration of Yayoi Kusama’s life and work. The artist deeply admires the fact that Yayoi Kusama is over 90 years old and is still prolific in her output. She is one of the most celebrated contemporary visual artists of modern times and thousands of people queue for hours to see her immersive installations.
The artist has a natural affinity for Yayoi Kusama’s work, for many reasons, including the fact that her thoughts and philosophies centre around the notions of love, peace and infinity.
The dots in the portrait have been distorted into ellipses (which in themselves reference the timeless, the cosmos, the galaxies and the orbits of planets). This is further reflected in the fact that even the portrait has exploded beyond its confines… hence the additional smaller components that make up the work.
The inclusion of the animation talks to the illusionary, shifting, changing nature of all things.
